  • 9. september  : gendannelse af diplomatiske forbindelser mellem USSR og FRG .
  • 20. september  : afskaffelse af besættelsesregimet i Østtyskland. Sovjetunionen tilbyder DDR en vis økonomisk uafhængighed ved at give afkald på krigsskader og samtidig bevare et stort kontingent af tropper på tysk jord.
  • 22. november  : Den første sovjetiske RDS-37 H-bombe eksploderer på stedet for Semipalatinsk-atomområdet i Kasakhstan .
  • 23. - 28. december  : Syvende kongres for det rumænske arbejderparti . Gheorghiu-Dej genvælges som første sekretær, men opgiver kontoret som regeringschef. Nicolae Ceaușescu går ind i det rumænske arbejderpartis politbureau.
